Oscar-Worthy

With the help of their teachers and Library Media Specialist Cathy Woodruff, Sixth graders at Stokes Elementary created and presented Oscar-worthy book trailers. The students utilized iPads, multiple apps, and other technologies to bring their trailers to life. The goal was to create a trailer that would entice viewers to read the book.

According to 6th-grade teacher Mrs. LaLonde, students had the freedom to pick a book of their choosing. Most selected books that they read this year, either independently or as a class read aloud. "Through this project, students were able to show their love and passion for reading and share some of their favorite titles with peers.” said LaLonde.

Students worked together in groups and were asked to critique each other’s work after each presentation. The students were very supportive of their classmates. “We are so proud of all the hard work students put into their book trailers. They were able to work collaboratively, incorporate technology, and excite their classmates about other grade-level appropriate texts. This project will be something we remember for years to come." said 6th-grade teacher Mrs. Keating.

Library Media Specialist Cathy Woodruff transformed the library into an award ceremony; fully equipped with red carpet, popcorn, and trophies. Library Teacher Assistant Mrs. McCarthy handed out awards to the students after they presented.

Mrs. Woodruff praised the 6th-grade teachers saying "These two teachers are so dedicated to literacy and STEM with their students.” she continued "When I heard students say "Hey, I want to read that book!" to another student's trailer, it made it all worth it. I wanted it to be an over the top, all about the students event, and it was. Kids convincing other kids to read a book, doesn't get better than that. The kids were so engaged and worked so hard. Just a great celebration.”

Stokes Principal Mrs. Miller also joined the presentations and shared how proud she was of all the students. "I also have to give a big shout out to Karen Miller for always helping to make all things possible to do the best by our children.” said Mrs. Woodruff.

Congratulations to all directors of these “award-winning” trailers! It is great to see one project incorporate so many different elements of learning.
